Going Pro at Wellness: An Offensive Tackle’s Transformation

Published on December 22, 2025

Last updated 11:42 AM December 22, 2025

Eric Janeau stands tall and proud showing off his Neau Life t-shirt. The word "Neau" is a double play on words: his last name and his second chance at life after his Wellstar doctors helped him overcome cancer and a host of conditions caused by excess weight. Neau Life is the name of his cancer support group and podcast.

Eric Janeau, a former All-American offensive tackle who once played football at Kansas State University and Western Illinois University and trained with the Detroit Lions, faced a host of serious health conditions—a rare form of bile duct cancer, obesity, heart failure, kidney disease and diabetes. With the support of his tight-knit network of doctors and the Wellstar Center for Best Health, Eric is overcoming these obstacles and inspiring others through his remarkable weight loss journey.

Life change kickoff: A rare cancer diagnosis

In 2021, Eric was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive bile duct cancer.

“I was in disbelief,” Eric remembered. “I didn’t eat all weekend.”

The only cure was surgery, but at 11 centimeters, the tumor was too large to be removed. Under the care of Medical Oncologist Dr. Carmen Klass, Eric began chemotherapy. At the time, he didn’t realize just how dismal his chances were for survival. At stage 4, the survival rate for this cancer type is 1%, with only four to six months to live if treatment isn’t successful.

Eric began chemotherapy accompanied by additional hydration to help with his heart failure and steroid shots that caused him to gain weight during treatment. After 12 rounds and six cycles of chemo, his body responded excellently—the mass shrunk by 40%. Surgical Oncologist Dr. Sahir Shroff re-evaluated him and cleared him for surgery to remove the tumor in early 2022.

Today, Eric is cancer free.

One team, one goal: Eric’s health comeback

Eric’s journey didn’t end with cancer treatment. He also faced severe obesity, putting him at risk for life-threatening conditions like heart disease and stroke. Dr. Klass was concerned and took the time to address Eric’s other health concerns.

“Dr. Klass and Dr. Shroff keep up with my health and they keep each other informed of what’s going on,” Eric said. “They're totally invested in my well-being.”

After chemotherapy and surgery to remove the tumor, Dr. Klass referred Eric to Dr. Mitzi Rubin at Wellstar Center for Best Health. It was time to lose weight and get his diabetes and high blood pressure in check.

I’m in the best shape of my life at 51—better shape now than when I played football,” he shared. “I’m on the treadmill every day.”

Grateful Patient

“The Center for Best Health is a comprehensive metabolic center with physicians, nurse practitioners, dietitians, exercise physiologists, psychologists and support groups working together,” Dr. Rubin explained. “We really work on the whole person to help them be successful.”

Eric’s care plan was individualized to his needs, including medications to help him lose weight and manage his diabetes, high blood pressure and heart failure. He worked with every member of the team at the Wellstar Center for Best Health. “Eric was all in,” Dr. Rubin said. “From that moment, he started exercising and eating healthy.”

It was hard, but Eric embraced the changes. He used an app to track his food and help him make wise choices. His dietitian helped him understand that he could still allow himself to occasionally have fried chicken or other favorites, but in moderation. And his exercise physiologist helped him progress his routine appropriately so he wouldn’t overdo it and hurt himself. Eric reached out to his care team frequently through Wellstar MyChart to help keep him on track.

Best health, best life

“I’ve lost 112 pounds. I’m in the best shape of my life at 51—better shape now than when I played football,” he shared. “I’m on the treadmill every day.”

Eric Janeau stands tall and proud on the football field. With the support of his tight-knit network of doctors and the Wellstar Center for Best Health, the former All-American offensive tackle is overcoming health obstacles and inspiring others through his remarkable weight loss journey.

Dr. Rubin recalled a powerful moment when she knew Eric had changed his mind set: “When he came in to see me the first time, he was huffing and puffing to get from the parking deck to our office. Now, here he is chit-chatting with me on the treadmill while we’re having our video visit.”

She added, “His diabetes and blood pressure are under incredible control. His heart is back to normal function. You’d have no idea this guy had heart problems and cancer. He has completely changed his lifestyle and has a new outlook on life.”

Eric credits Wellstar Center for Best Health. “If you want someone that really cares about you, I’d recommend Dr. Rubin to anybody.”

Spreading hope

What keeps him going? As one of 13 siblings, he says he wants to live for family.

“My family is my why,” Eric said. “Give up? No, we don’t give up. God spared me for a reason. It could be cancer, mental illness, anxiety, worthlessness. I want to be that person that says it’s not that bad. We fight for this life.”

He also knew that by conquering his health challenges, he could inspire others to tackle the odds stacked against them. During his cancer treatment, Eric became a certified life coach and motivational speaker. He launched a cancer support group he calls Neau Life, a play on his own last name: Janeau. On Tuesdays, he hosts a podcast for cancer survivors. He often travels across the country to offer hope and inspiration when he gives speeches at corporate or American Cancer Society events.

“I just want to give back to others,” he said.

Wellstar PeopleCare | Reaching New Heights After Head & Neck Cancer

David Butler's cancer journey took him through a rare jaw reconstruction, multiple rounds of radiation treatment, chemotherapy, intense rehabilitation and coordinated care from specialists across Wellstar.

From survival to summit

After David did the hard work of fighting cancer twice and feeling like recovery was truly sailing along, he set a new goal. David and one of his daughters, Madeline Hawkins, completed a hiking and camping trip that included summiting Blood Mountain in North Georgia. They covered 14 miles, camping overnight and making friends along the trail.

Fully loaded with walking sticks, packs on their backs and huge smiles, David and his daughter head out for a multiple day hiking excursion.

The hike wasn't easy.

“I forgot you have to be half mountain goat!” he quipped.

David moved at his own pace and pushed through lingering fatigue. Reaching the summit’s stunning vista at Preacher’s Rock was a reminder of how far he had come since his cancer diagnosis.

Wellstar PeopleCare | Beating Cancer Twice with Coordinated Care

David Butler’s cancer journey began when he underwent treatment for an aggressive head and neck cancer. Supported by his family, faith and a team of head and neck cancer specialists, he had part of his jaw removed and went through radiation therapy and intense rehabilitation.

A major setback

The same year of his jaw surgery and initial radiation course, David’s recovery was beginning to feel like “smooth sailing.” Just as life started to feel manageable again, he faced an unexpected challenge.

David and his wife, Jill, got devastating news: routine follow-up imaging revealed three new tumors on the other side of his neck and tongue. Dr. Fiyin Sokoya, David’s cancer surgeon, removed lymph nodes from David’s neck, had them biopsied and confirmed that it was an aggressive cancer.

At first, David felt so discouraged that he didn’t want to move forward with treatment.

However, seeing that a group of experts were working together to give him the best, evidence-based treatment path for his unique circumstance gave him confidence to renew his fight against cancer.

Wellstar PeopleCare | Moving Fast, Working Together: Advanced Head & Neck Cancer Surgery Keeps David Smiling

David Butler's cancer journey took him through a rare jaw reconstruction, radiation and coordinated care from specialists across Wellstar. His care team collaborated to provide what he needed as quickly and efficiently as possible.

A bothersome mouth sore

Lean and energetic, David is quick with a joke and even quicker with a smile. A neatly trimmed mustache frames a grin that lights up his blue eyes, illuminating his trademark optimism and humor. They’re qualities he kept intact throughout cancer treatment and draws on today, when he encourages people who are newly diagnosed with cancer.

It started with a sore on his gum in the fall of 2023. He assumed it would heal on its own. Instead, it got worse. When he could hardly swallow a few months later, his dentist referred him to an oral surgeon for a biopsy. That’s when he got the life-changing news: it was cancer.

“You hear the big C and it scares you to death,” David said. “But there's light at the end of the tunnel. There's always hope.”

What followed was cancer treatment involving surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and support from a whole team of cancer specialists. Along the way, David said he leaned on his faith, the support of his wife, Jill, who he credits as his biggest advocate—and the expertise of Wellstar caregivers.
