Love Dr Rubin and her staff

January 16, 2026

5

I love Dr. Rubin. She is definitely very available. She responds to my chart all the time, unlike other physicians within WellSTAR or other groups. And the fact that she's responding mostly, sometimes it could be a PA or MA or nurse, but because she's responding, it helps a lot instead of going back and forth or misunderstanding because she knows her patients. And it just feels more personable versus a doctor telling whoever else is reading it what to say. Sometimes there's just a disconnect there.

January 16, 2026

5

January 9, 2026

5

Dr. Rubin has amazing bedside manner and the staff, the office staff, the medical assistant, everybody was amazing. I would highly recommend this office.

January 10, 2026

5

The 3 Staff members at the front desk were very helpful, friendly and made the environment very welcoming. The Nurse Practitioner who took my vitals was skilled, and very nice. Dr Rubin is just an amazing healthcare provider that makes you feel heard, and seen unlike most who never make direct eye contact with you. Dr. Rubin really has such a charismatic charm about herself that all are drawn too which helps you relax and have the best possible visit with a trusted healthcare provider. She is also very encouraging and intelligent enough to understand the needs of her patients especially persons of color who are rarely seen in consultations and made to feel invisible. Dr. Rubin walks in the door excited to see you and the only thing that matters after she enters the room ....... Is her patients needs which she seamlessly meets ALWAYS!

January 10, 2026

December 31, 2025

5

Dr. Rubin was wonderful. I enjoyed talking with her, very knowledgeable and I think potentially helpful. This was my first visit, so it's very hard for me to evaluate different parts of the program and whatever. The thing I struggle with is the video conferencing. It's just, I'm not technical and I'm not used to that and it's a new thing that I so far don't like very much. But anyway, I felt good about my discussion with her and certainly don't have anything negative to say about that practice. It's the technical part that's still got me stumped a little bit.

I love Dr.

Eric Janeau stands tall and proud showing off his Neau Life t-shirt. The word "Neau" is a double play on words: his last name and his second chance at life after his Wellstar doctors helped him overcome cancer and a host of conditions caused by excess weight. Neau Life is the name of his cancer support group and podcast.

EricCare

Eric Janeau, a former All-American offensive tackle who once played football at Kansas State University and Western Illinois University and trained with the Detroit Lions, faced a host of serious health conditions—a rare form of bile duct cancer, obesity, heart failure, kidney disease and diabetes. With the support of his tight-knit network of doctors and the Wellstar Center for Best Health, Eric is overcoming these obstacles and inspiring others through his remarkable weight loss journey.

Life change kickoff: A rare cancer diagnosis

In 2021, Eric was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive bile duct cancer.

“I was in disbelief,” Eric remembered. “I didn’t eat all weekend.”

The only cure was surgery, but at 11 centimeters, the tumor was too large to be removed. Under the care of Medical Oncologist Dr. Carmen Klass, Eric began chemotherapy. At the time, he didn’t realize just how dismal his chances were for survival. At stage 4, the survival rate for this cancer type is 1%, with only four to six months to live if treatment isn’t successful.

Eric began chemotherapy accompanied by additional hydration to help with his heart failure and steroid shots that caused him to gain weight during treatment. After 12 rounds and six cycles of chemo, his body responded excellently—the mass shrunk by 40%. Surgical Oncologist Dr. Sahir Shroff re-evaluated him and cleared him for surgery to remove the tumor in early 2022.

Today, Eric is cancer free.

One team, one goal: Eric’s health comeback

Eric’s journey didn’t end with cancer treatment. He also faced severe obesity, putting him at risk for life-threatening conditions like heart disease and stroke. Dr. Klass was concerned and took the time to address Eric’s other health concerns.

“Dr. Klass and Dr. Shroff keep up with my health and they keep each other informed of what’s going on,” Eric said. “They're totally invested in my well-being.”

After chemotherapy and surgery to remove the tumor, Dr. Klass referred Eric to Dr. Mitzi Rubin at Wellstar Center for Best Health. It was time to lose weight and get his diabetes and high blood pressure in check.

6 Weight Loss Questions Answered by Our Experts

People who want to lose weight have more options than ever before. However, deciding which one to pursue can be a challenge. Should you go for lifestyle changes alone? Consider weight loss surgery? Or look into injectable weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy?

We asked two Wellstar physicians to weigh in on this popular topic—and their answers might surprise you. Dr. Lisa Hilton is director of minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at Wellstar MCG Health Medical Center and director of the Center of Obesity and Metabolism at Augusta University. Dr. Mitzi Rubin is a family medicine physician and director of the Wellstar Center for Best Health. Here’s what these two experts have to say about obesity, treatment options and the importance of a comprehensive approach to weight loss.

Let’s cut to the chase: What is the best way to lose weight?

Dr. Rubin: There is no magic fix that works for everyone. Many people have tried every fad diet out there. They’ve tried being more active. Maybe they’ve even had bariatric surgery or used injectable weight loss drugs—but nothing works. If this sounds like you, schedule an appointment at a comprehensive weight loss center. Find one that offers medical and surgical treatment options and personalized recommendations. And make sure they provide ongoing support to help you meet and maintain your weight loss goals.

Dr. Hilton: Both of our centers take this comprehensive approach. We use every tool available to treat obesity. You may be successful with lifestyle changes alone, or perhaps you need to meet with a behavioral therapist or consider surgery, medicine or a combination of therapies. Everyone is unique, and their treatment plan has to be unique too.

What’s your take on weight loss injectables—are you a fan?

Dr. Rubin: I’m excited about drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic, which people sometimes refer to as GLP-1s. They work because they control your appetite and reduce ‘food noise,’ a persistent, unwanted focus on food.

However, not everyone can tolerate the side effects, which include nausea, constipation and diarrhea. If you want to lose more than 20% of your body weight, using one of those drugs alone probably won’t get you there. Another consideration is that many people need to continue taking these drugs for life—even after they reach their weight loss goals.

What are some misconceptions about bariatric surgery?

Dr. Hilton: Two big misconceptions are that bariatric surgery is dangerous and it doesn’t work. Here’s what I’d say: First, bariatric surgery is as safe as a routine procedure like gallbladder removal. Second, bariatric surgery is the most long-lasting and effective treatment for obesity available. Most people who have bariatric surgery maintain their weight loss at the 10-year mark.

With weight loss drugs dominating the headlines, have you noticed a shift away from surgery?

Dr. Hilton: Yes, but I think that’s temporary. The drugs are sparking conversations about obesity and weight loss, which is a good thing. Patients who have never considered bringing up obesity to their primary care provider are asking about the injectables. They’re making appointments at a comprehensive weight loss center, and they are discovering they have a lot of choices. It isn’t ‘medicine or surgery’ or ‘medicine versus surgery.’ Sometimes the best answer is both.

Can you share a weight loss success story with us?

Dr. Rubin: We’ve had so many success stories. One of our rock star patients has lost 250 pounds under our care. Now, she’s living her life again. Her diabetes is in remission, and her cholesterol has improved. She’s no longer depressed and isolated. My whole team is so proud of her—she has completely changed her lifestyle, sees our dietitian regularly and attends our support group. Another patient has lost 135 pounds. He and his wife are losing weight together, and it’s fantastic.

Dr. Hilton: We ask our patients at their first visit, ‘What does success look like to you?’ Most have a number in mind, but non-scale victories are important too. Some want to get off their diabetes medicine or shop in a regular store instead of a big and tall store. Others want to take their kids to Disney World or a water park and have fun on the rides—not just watch.

What is the No. 1 key to weight loss success?

Dr. Rubin: The key is to make lasting lifestyle changes. Medication and bariatric surgery can only get you so far. If you are ready to make these changes, consider finding a team who offers personalized, long-term support. Dr. Hilton, myself and others at Wellstar are here to help!

Ready to take your first step? If you’re considering lifestyle changes, medication or surgery for weight loss, it all starts with a conversation. Schedule a visit with your primary care clinician to discuss your goals, health history and next steps.

Robert, a new grandfather, poses proudly with his daughter and her infant son. With Wellstar helping him manage his HCM, he can keep making memories with his growing family.

RobertCare

Robert Frederick was living a typical life, going to work and spending time with his mother, siblings and children. But then it became hard to breathe when walking short distances or climbing stairs. He got dizzy. Perhaps most disturbingly, he passed out several times—once at a Braves baseball game he attended with his siblings.

"I didn't know what was going on!" Robert recalled.

Difficulty controlling AFib with medication

After passing out the first time, he went to urgent care and was then taken to the hospital by ambulance. He learned his symptoms were caused by atrial fibrillation (AFib), an irregular heartbeat.

Robert began to see Dr. David Caras, a Wellstar general cardiologist, and learned AFib is related to high blood pressure. Successfully managing high blood pressure often helps people keep AFib under control. Despite their efforts, AFib sent Robert to the emergency room two more times.

Suspicion of HCM

Dr. Caras reviewed Robert’s hospital records and found he had increased wall thickness of the left ventricle and a gradient—a pressure difference between the left ventricle and the aorta when the heart pumps. These findings were consistent with a condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Characterized by abnormal thickening of the heart muscle, this disease makes it difficult for the heart to pump blood effectively.

Dr. Caras referred Robert to Dr. Melissa Burroughs, an HCM specialist at Wellstar. As a Center of Excellence designated by the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association, Wellstar is one of the leading providers of comprehensive HCM care in Metro Atlanta.

"We have physicians in the group—designated HCM specialists—that are the point person of the patient’s care," Dr. Burroughs explained. “This includes close communication and collaboration with electrophysiologists, surgeons, advanced heart failure specialists, social workers and behavioral health professionals.”

A rare finding leads to Mayo Clinic Care Network collaboration

Robert said, “Dr. Burroughs wanted to do genetic testing to verify that I had HCM."

But genetic testing revealed a rare genetic variant—one not known to be associated with HCM. Dr. Burroughs called it a “diagnostic conundrum.” The genetic variant found was typically associated with a different cardiac disease that Robert did not have. However, he did have clear signs of HCM.

To investigate further, Dr. Burroughs collaborated with other HCM experts through the Mayo Clinic Care Network, of which Wellstar is a member. Mayo Clinic, which is also an HCM Center of Excellence, provided access to its unpublished database, finding Robert’s rare mutation was present in two other family groups with HCM.

“It’s very important that we add to the science—that we include our patients in the registry to enhance what is already known about HCM,” Dr. Burroughs said.

Robert added, “Dr. Burroughs is very persistent. She wanted to know, ‘Why are you having these problems? What’s the root cause?’ She went above and beyond to find that out.”
