Community Outreach at Wellstar
Wellstar Health System is a nonprofit organization and is committed to being an engaged community partner. At Wellstar, we are more than healthcare, we are PeopleCare, and our passion for people extends into the communities we serve. We are committed to elevating the health and well-being of our community through outreach and partnership that honors all voices. Wellstar relies on and values our community partners and the role they play in positively impacting the health and well-being of every person we serve. Wellstar partners with mission-aligned and other non-profit organizations to address priority health needs and social determinants of health as defined through our Community Health Needs Assessments, and that also further a social cause and provide community benefit. We work alongside our business and civic partners and leaders to amplify health awareness, contribute to economic development and growth, and to help our communities thrive through service. We also partner with both academic and other organizations dedicated to career development to help prepare the next generation of caregivers and healthcare workers in both clinical and non-clinical capacities. In addition to community partnerships, Wellstar also engages in our community through corporate volunteerism, sponsorships, event participation and speaking engagements that align with our areas of focus. Wellstar supports our partner organizations such as those providing access to food and housing by engaging our team members in volunteerism and community service through Wellstar’s CommunityCare initiative. Wellstar also provides health education and awareness on important health and wellness topics such as cardiac health and stroke prevention, breast and prostate cancer prevention, and mental health including suicide prevention, and substance abuse prevention and treatment.

Your Body’s Check Engine Light—Don’t Wait for It to Flash

Most men pride themselves on being low maintenance. If nothing’s obviously wrong, why bother going to the doctor? But here’s the thing—just like your car, your body can be quietly heading toward trouble long before any warning lights come on.
Still, many men will change their brake pads before they book a physical. We rotate our tires, change the oil and keep up with maintenance because we know neglect leads to breakdowns. But when it comes to our health, many of us take a “wait and see” approach that can backfire.
At Wellstar, we see the impact of that delay all too often: men arriving with advanced prostate cancer, uncontrolled blood pressure or kidney problems that could have been caught early. These aren’t rare cases. They are common consequences of skipping routine check-ups.
The reality is that many of the biggest threats to men’s health—prostate cancer, heart disease, low testosterone and diabetes—often start with no symptoms at all. You might feel fine while a problem is quietly progressing. A simple prostate-specific antigen blood test, a blood pressure check or lab work to monitor cholesterol and glucose can give us the early warning signs we need to keep you healthy and active.
We also know that men tend to avoid talking about certain issues, including urinary symptoms, sexual performance, energy levels or even stress and burnout. These aren’t simply part of “getting older.” They’re signs that something might be off, and they’re usually treatable.

- Make your annual check-up non-negotiable.

Wellstar Partners with Feeding the Valley to Improve Food Access and Nutrition
Wellstar Center for Health Equity and Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center have launched the Food as Medicine program. In partnership with Feeding the Valley Food Bank, this initiative supports Wellstar’s strategy to improve food access in high-need communities.
Patients will be screened during primary care visits at offices in the LaGrange area for food insecurity. Clinicians will then connect patients who screen positive for food insecurity to a medically tailored meal program offered by Feeding the Valley.
Participants will receive 10 healthy, prepared meals each week for 90 days. They will also gain access to Cooking Matters classes held at Wellstar West Georgia’s Training Center, where they will learn to shop for and cook healthy meals on a budget. By equipping patients with practical nutrition knowledge, budget-friendly cooking skills and a three-month supply of healthy meals, Wellstar aims to support people in making lasting, health-boosting changes to their diets and overall well-being. While food insecurity is a concern identified by our Community Health Needs Assessment, diabetes and other diet-related illnesses are also a major threat to our community’s well-being.
Wellstar is increasingly working toward healthy food solutions that address both food access and health. Our efforts with Wellstar Mobile Markets, in partnership with Goodr, and our food rescue initiatives, in collaboration with Goodr and Second Helpings Atlanta, show our commitment to increasing food access.
