Know Your Numbers: A Community‑Powered Approach to Heart Health

High blood pressure is often called the “silent killer”—not because it’s rare, but because so many people are living with it without knowing their numbers. Across Cobb and Douglas counties, a new, community‑centered effort expands access to blood pressure monitoring and education.

Through a partnership between Wellstar Community Health, Wellstar Foundation, American Heart Association and Cobb & Douglas Public Health, the Know Your Numbers initiative is helping residents take an active role in their heart health—one reading at a time.

Meeting people where they are

At its core, Know Your Numbers is built on a simple yet powerful belief: Awareness is key to better health outcomes. Many people—especially those who are unable to get the healthcare they need—do not have easy access to blood pressure monitoring tools or clear information about what their numbers mean.

Know Your Numbers addresses that gap by placing easy‑to‑use blood pressure monitoring stations directly inside community and faith‑based spaces. These are places where people already feel safe, welcomed and supported. By placing these tools into trusted environments, the program reduces barriers and normalizes conversations about heart health.

More than a reading: education, empowerment and connection to care

Each blood pressure station is paired with an interactive education session led in partnership with the American Heart Association. Participants learn:

  • How to properly take a blood pressure reading
  • What the numbers mean for their health
  • When and how to seek follow‑up care

This approach helps ensure that people don’t just know their blood pressure numbers—they know how to take action to stay healthy.

Advancing public health priorities together

Know Your Numbers is funded through the 2025–2026 Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) Partnership Grant awarded by Cobb & Douglas Public Health. The initiative directly advances CHIP priorities focused on access to care, chronic disease prevention and culturally responsive health education across Cobb and Douglas counties.

Through this grant period, the partnership is working toward meaningful outcomes, including:

  • Installing blood pressure monitoring stations in community settings
  • Delivering tailored education sessions on heart health
  • Expanding access to individual blood pressure kits
  • Increasing self‑reported blood pressure monitoring among participants
  • Strengthening connections to primary care and social care resources

These efforts are committed to long-term engagement and results, not just a one-time blood pressure check.

A collective commitment to heart health equity

No single organization can address high blood pressure alone. What makes Know Your Numbers powerful is the strength of the partnership behind it. The Wellstar Foundation plays a critical role in grant funding and supporting the program, while community partners bring local insight and trust. Together with American Heart Association and Cobb & Douglas Public Health, the initiative demonstrates what is possible when clinical expertise, public health strategy and community voice come together.

Looking ahead: strengthening health through trusted community partnerships

As Know Your Numbers continues to grow, the heart of the initiative remains its partnership with local churches and faith‑based organizations that open their doors, lend their leadership and serve as trusted anchors for health in their communities. These congregations are not simply host sites—they are active partners in promoting prevention, wellness and connection to care.

A special thank you to our Congregational Health Network partners supporting this work by hosting blood pressure monitoring stations:

  • Christ Anglican Church
  • Douglasville First United Methodist Church
  • Golden Memorial United Methodist Church
  • New Mountain Top Baptist Church

Amazing Advancements—Robotics Expand Patient Care Options

Robotic surgery has transformed how surgeons care for patients with new innovations yet again. At Wellstar, continued investment in advanced technology is helping elevate surgical care across specialties—giving patients the option to have more precise and less invasive procedures that are easier to recover from.

“Technology continues to advance to provide newer and safer alternatives to treat our patients,” said Dr. Aaron Bolduc, a general surgeon at Wellstar MCG Health Medical Center. “As we adopt this new technology, we are able to lead the way in patient care with excellent outcomes.

Wellstar has expanded its robotic surgery program with the addition of the Da Vinci 5 robotic surgical system—also known as the DV5—at most locations, along with new applications for single-port surgery. These innovations build on years of robotic experience while helping clinicians deliver world-class care and train the physicians of the future.

Fast recoveries

The latest technologies continue to redefine what’s possible in surgery, including even shorter hospital stays and faster recovery timelines.

Dr. Jay Singh, Wellstar chief surgical officer and a colon and rectal surgeon, said significantly smaller incisions make a big impact: “That is potentially huge from the standpoint of patient satisfaction, decreased pain, quicker recovery time, a decrease in narcotics used and a quicker return to work.”

The impact is so great that some robotic procedures that previously required a few nights in the hospital are now being done as outpatient procedures, allowing patients to recover in the comfort of their homes.

DV5: A new level of precision

The DV5 represents a significant step forward in robotic surgery—notably for surgeon awareness and control. One of its most notable advancements is force feedback: “The ability to sense hard and soft tissue during robotic surgeries is a game changer,” said Dr. Julie Chang, an obstetrics and gynecology specialist. She was the first surgeon to use the DV5 system at Wellstar Cobb Medical Center.

“Surgeries will be even more precise and efficient with this tool, which will further reduce post-operative pain and make recovery time faster,” said Dr. Chang.

The machine’s sensory feedback means surgeons can apply the exact amount of pressure needed.

“The DV5 allows the surgeon to sense how much push-or-pull force they apply to delicate structures in the body,” said Dr. Fritz Jean-Pierre, a bariatric surgeon at Wellstar Kennestone Regional Medical Center. “Less strain means less trauma and potential injury, leading to faster patient recovery.”

Wellstar’s robotic program is grounded in decades of experience, combined with a commitment to adopt best‑in‑class technology.

“Having performed robotic surgery for well over 20 years, I started with the very first Da Vinci surgical robot,” said Dr. Scott Miller, Wellstar director of robotic surgical services and a urologist at Wellstar North Fulton Medical Center. “I was amazed when that came around, but I never cease to be amazed by every advancement. Now we have introduced the DV5 model to most Wellstar locations with 10,000 times processing power.”

With that comes enhanced visualization, instrument responsiveness and precision across a wide range of procedures.

“The DV5 is ideal for many urologic procedures, such as prostate and kidney removal, bladder surgery and urinary tract reconstruction,” Dr. Miller said. “The improved range-of-motion and visualization features help us protect healthy tissues and nerves.”

Wellstar Douglas Medical Center Receives 2025 Georgia Oglethorpe Award

For the first time, Wellstar Douglas Medical Center has earned the prestigious Georgia Oglethorpe Award, the highest level of recognition for organizational performance excellence in the state.

Each year, the Sterling Council presents the award to organizations and businesses that demonstrate performance excellence in their management and operations. Wellstar Douglas is the first business in Douglas County to receive the award.

Founded in 1974, the hospital recently celebrated its 50th year in the community. The non-profit 108-bed community hospital in Douglasville delivers an extensive array of inpatient and outpatient services, including interventional cardiology, maternity care with a level II neonatal intensive care unit, hyperbaric wound care, rehabilitation therapy and robotic surgery, including total joint orthopedics.

Wellstar Douglas President Heath King said hospital leaders use tiered safety huddles, visual management boards, department-based huddles and "A3 Thinking," a problem-solving and decision-making methodology that helps teams identify the root causes of problems and develop solutions that promote a high-reliability organization.

"These leadership methods have created a strong system of two-way communication that links our hospital's senior-most leaders with frontline team members," King said. "We're thrilled that the Sterling Council recognizes our approach for achieving industry-leading financial, quality, marketplace, consumer engagement and workforce results."
