Pacemaker & ICD Implants
Pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICDs) are devices that regulate arrhythmias — irregular heartbeats — through implanted devices.
Regulating Heart Rhythm
Pacemakers
A pacemaker sends electrical signals to keep the heart beating at a steady, normal rate. Placed under the skin, the small device can speed up a slow rhythm, control a fast rhythm and coordinate the heart's chambers.Implantable Converter Defibrillator (ICD)
An ICD is similar to a pacemaker but larger. An ICD delivers two different levels of electrical shock — a low level to convert an abnormal rhythm back to normal and a high level if the arrhythmia is incredibly severe. It can detect ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation and send out a shock to reset the heart.Learn more about heart rhythm care at Wellstar.
