Also known as complementary therapies, integrative therapies can help people feel better during and after cancer treatment by reducing side effects and improving overall well-being.

There are many different types of integrative therapies, such as acupuncture, art classes and nutrition therapy. You can learn about different types of holistic treatments below. We recommend speaking with your cancer team about which may benefit you and how to get connected.

Nutrition therapy

The body’s nourishment plays a vital role in maintaining well-being, fighting cancer and discouraging cancer from coming back. Even when it’s difficult, making the right food choices can help people feel better.

A registered dietitian who specializes in nutrition for people with cancer facilitates our nutrition therapy classes. These learning opportunities enhance a person’s relationship with food during and after treatment to promote positive outcomes.

Interactive classes and cooking demonstrations are available at some Wellstar locations.

Acupuncture

This traditional Chinese medicine technique can help with symptoms that people with cancer may experience, such as nausea and vomiting. Acupuncture needles are applied to treat points on the skin leading people to benefit physically, mentally and spiritually.

Prayer and spirituality

Many people with cancer have said that being on the cancer journey increased their spirituality and brought them closer to God. Praying, reading books on your faith and connecting with others of similar faith have brought peace, comfort and strength to many people with cancer. Patients at many of Wellstar’s cancer programs can connect with a chaplain to further explore their spirituality. Also, it can be therapeutic to talk to leaders and other believers from your faith community.

Support groups

Support groups can be an essential therapeutic outlet for people following a cancer diagnosis. Learn from others and share your experiences to stay emotionally and physically healthy. Wellstar offers cancer-related support groups.

Yoga

Yoga can be an effective way to relieve some symptoms of chronic disease such as pain, fatigue, nausea, sleep problems and inflammation. When practiced regularly, yoga can lead to lower stress, increased relaxation and physical wellness.

Anyone can participate in yoga classes, which can accommodate those with limited strength and mobility. Relaxation, stretching and breathing exercises alternate with moves aimed at core strengthening. Select Wellstar locations host yoga classes for people with cancer.

Art Classes

Creating can benefit patients both mentally and physically. Making art can help people with cancer experience a better cognitive and emotional state while relieving some of the physical issues associated with treatment, such as pain, nausea, fatigue and anxiety. Through yoga, people have the opportunity to improve their mind-body connection by engaging in various forms of artistic expression. Patients, families and caregivers are welcome to join regardless of talent or technical ability at select Wellstar locations.

Crochet classes

Crocheting is a popular art form that has therapeutic benefits for people with cancer. Our crochet classes are instructed by a master in the art of crochet at select Wellstar locations. Participation in this group allows patients and caregivers to learn a new skill or share their talent with others. Projects such as crocheted caps and lap blankets are often undertaken by this group to benefit others undergoing cancer treatment.
