Who are our Wellstar chaplains?

Wellstar chaplains, who are theologically trained and clinically experienced, provide religious, spiritual and humanist care to all persons. They are endorsed by a religious body or organization and have a master’s level or greater education. Many of our chaplains are ordained ministers who are board certified and can perform ceremonies and rituals or lead services. They understand the unique situations, difficult decision making and challenging moments that can occur when facing healthcare decisions and experiences.

Regardless of your faith tradition — or even if you do not consider yourself religious or spiritual — Wellstar chaplains are here for you and your loved ones. Their primary goal is to provide a compassionate and supportive environment that allows patients, families and other caregivers to feel safe and respected.

Our chaplains are involved in patient care and can be found:

  • Providing active and reflective listening
  • Offering non-judgmental emotional, religious and spiritual care
  • Participating in patient care meetings and developing care plans
  • Assisting with Advance Care Planning documents
  • Alongside palliative care practitioners, contributing to ethics consults
  • Responding to emergencies, traumas and catastrophic events

Rev. Dr. Patricia E. Symonette Gary

Regional Director of Spiritual Health

DEdMin, EdM, MDiv, ACPE Certified Educator

Patricia is a native of Nassau, Bahamas. She was active from childhood in Ebenezer Baptist, a church founded and pastored by her father Bishop Elkin Symonette Sr. There she served multifariously as Choir Director, Sunday School Superintendent, Chair of Evangelism, and host of the church radio broadcast, “Channel of Blessings.” She was ordained at Ebenezer in 1995 and is endorsed by the same church to pursue CPE and chaplaincy.

Valedictorian of her 1999 graduating class at Nassau’s Atlantic College and Theological Seminary, Patricia earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in theology. She matriculated to Florida A&M University, Tallahassee, Florida where she completed a master's degree in counseling (MEd) in 2003, graduating summa cum laude. She was granted a Master of Divinity (MDiv) equivalency in 2013 by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) in Atlanta, Georgia. She completed the Doctor of Educational Ministry Degree (DEdMin) in May 2020 at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia.

In 2003, Patricia began a seven-year directorship of Tallahassee’s Bethel Family Counseling and Outreach Center. She relocated to Atlanta, Georgia in 2010 to join the Care and Counseling Center of Georgia (CCCG). Through CCCG, Patricia completed two units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at Metro State Women’s Prison and Northside Hospital. She completed a year’s residency (2011-2012) as chaplain at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (Egleston Campus). Serving as CPE Administrator in 2013, Patricia concurrently supervised Chaplain Interns at Gwinnett Medical Center. She completed her training as an ACPE Certified Educator in 2019.

Since 2014, Patricia has been Director of Spiritual Health at Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center (downtown and south campuses). In 2020, she became Wellstar Health Systems’ South Regional Director of Spiritual Health. Patricia is married to an Atlanta native, Bert Gary, with whom she co-pastors at Owl Rock United Methodist Church in Atlanta. Her hobbies include singing, cooking, birding, and traveling while meeting persons from varying ethnicities, cultures, and backgrounds. Her newfound playtime is herping with her husband on the weekends.

Patricia is passionate in walking alongside others while offering spiritual guidance regardless of race, gender, or creed. Her love for CPE education and spiritual care in chaplaincy continues to be a part of her journey in the transformation of lives.

Rev. Sarah Murray

Regional Director of Spiritual Health

MDiv

Sarah has always felt called to serve God and serve God's people, and that calling has taken many forms. Before embarking on hospital Chaplaincy work, she lived and served in North Africa, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe, working with faith-based NGOs and community-based organizations. She found her love for chaplaincy in 2007 when completing her first unit of CPE and witnessing the transformational power of spiritual care when it is offered to patients and their loved ones during times of crisis and pain. Over the next several years, Sarah’s passion for spiritual care work led her to serve as a Chaplain, educator, and leader of Spiritual Care teams in multiple health systems including Hospice Atlanta and Grady Health System. She came to Wellstar Health System in 2016 and currently serves as a Director of Spiritual Health supporting Kennestone, Cobb, Paulding, Douglas, and Windy Hill Hospitals. She loves that the job allows her to support other chaplains who are living out their calling to offer truly excellent Spiritual Care—that it allows her to help make changes for more equitable and culturally inclusive spiritual care—and ultimately that it allows her to support others who are in need of connection, care, and support. She is so thankful to be able to do this work each day!
