Vijay Dev Lakkappa, MD, is a board-certified physician with over 20 years of experience in internal medicine. He currently practices within Wellstar Health System as a hospitalist at Wellstar Cobb Hospital and the Wellstar Center for Best Health.
Dr. Lakkappa earned his medical degree from Bangalore Medical College in India and completed his internal medicine residency at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County in Chicago. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Obesity Medicine and holds an active medical license in Georgia.
As an experienced hospitalist, Dr. Lakkappa developed a deeper interest in obesity medicine during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he observed firsthand how elevated body mass index was strongly associated with worse prognoses and complications in hospitalized patients. This experience strengthened his commitment to integrating obesity management into comprehensive patient care to improve long-term health outcomes.

The name "Center for Best Health" sets an expectation that simply isn't met. Walking in, you might reasonably expect a comprehensive approach to health - pain management, medication related fatigue, sleep issues, overall quality of life. That is not what this place is. It is a weight loss clinic. Full stop. They should call it what it is: Center for Weight Management. To be fair, weight loss does improve overall health - that connection is real and valid. But the assumption that weight loss alone solves everything ignores the bigger picture. For patients managing serious conditions and multiple medications, fatigue isn't a lifestyle problem - it's a medical one. When your medications physically prevent meaningful exercise, telling someone to "move more" isn't helpful, it's dismissive. A truly comprehensive approach would address the barriers TO weight loss - not just the weight itself. Medication induced fatigue, sleep disruption, pain management and mobility limitations are all factors that directly impact a patient's ability to lose weight and improve their health. If Wellstar genuinely wants to help patients achieve their "best health," they need to look beyond the scale. Until then, the name is misleading marketing, not a medical promise. Rename it honestly. Treat patients completely. Do both.

Yes, I just didn't like the fact that prescribed a prescription that was not covered by my insurance plan and I was not in the market of paying for any high price medication.
