Understanding the Types of GIST
KIT or PDGFRA GIST
About 75% of GIST tumors are caused by mutations in the KIT or PDGFRA genes. These mutations are not inherited but occur randomly. The good news—these types of tumors often respond well to medications that directly target their molecular cause.NF1 or SDHx GIST
These less common forms of GIST result from mutations in other genes, such as NF1 or SDHx. Unlike KIT or PDGFRA mutations, these can sometimes be hereditary.
