The WellStar Ethics Program works to promote ethical practices in the care of patients and throughout the organization. The program provides education, ethics consultation services, assistance with policy development, ethical leadership formation and advance care planning resources.

The overall goal of the Ethics Program is to provide leadership and resources to promote ethical behavior and decision-making aligned with the mission, vision and values of the health system. We build capacities for ethical decision-making, promote a thriving moral community within the hospital to improve patient care, and create integrated, sustainable and accountable ethics resources from bedside to boardroom.

Ethics Consultation Services

Patients, surrogate decision-makers, families, health care providers and others involved in a patient’s care are regularly faced with challenging ethical questions and dilemmas that arise in the practice of healthcare. For example:

  • How should surrogate decision-makers go about making life-altering medical decisions on behalf of a patient when the patient cannot make informed decisions for him or herself?
  • What should be done when a patient’s surrogate decision-makers disagree about whether the patient would or would not have wanted a specific type of medical treatment?
  • What is necessary in order to conduct a good informed consent process for medical treatment?
  • How should statements or wishes expressed in a patient’s health care advance directive be interpreted in a particular situation?

The Ethics Consultation Service (staffed by Ethics Consultants) is a resource to help identify, clarify, and attempt to resolve ethical questions, dilemmas, conflicts, and issues that arise during patient care in the WellStar system. An Ethics Consultation is a process in which experienced Ethics Consultants work with individuals and/or teams to address ethical questions, dilemmas, and issues in a thoughtful and precise manner. The Ethics Consultation Service is an advisory service; patients, families, surrogate decision-makers, health care providers and others remain in charge of and responsible for their own decisions.
