My experience with the first medical assistant who took my vitals was troubling. When she noted that my blood pressure was elevated, I explained that my initial reading is often high and that it is typically measured twice to obtain a more accurate result. I also shared that my blood pressure had been significantly lower during a visit with my primary care physician the previous week. Her response-"that was a week ago"-was delivered with apparent exasperation and left me feeling as though my observations and knowledge of my own health were being dismissed. When I later raised the same concern with the endocrinologist, she also seemed dismissive, though she offered to have my blood pressure retaken. A second medical assistant repeated the measurement, and the reading was 130/79 -- the agreed upon goal range. I would have considered the matter resolved had my written discharge summary reflected the updated reading. Instead, it listed only the initial, elevated measurement. When I questioned the discrepancy, I was told it was not significant. I advocated for my medical record to accurately reflect my health status. I was then given two options: trust that the corrected reading would be entered later, or wait for the endocrinologist to become available to discuss my concerns and authorize a revised summary. I expect to be an active partner in my healthcare. I also expect my concerns to be heard, taken seriously, and accurately reflected in my medical records. Anything less is unacceptable and am hopeful WellStar shares the same standard of accuracy and attentiveness to patient care. Thank you.
