Visitor Information

You or your representative has the right to consent to receive visitors whom you designate, including, but not limited to, a spouse, a domestic partner (including a same-sex domestic partner), another family member or a friend. You also have the right to withdraw or deny such consent at any time.

The health facility is not permitted to restrict, limit or otherwise deny visitation privileges on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation or disability. All visitors should enjoy full and equal visitation privileges consistent with patient preferences.

To accommodate our patients, please follow these guidelines:

  • All hospital doors remain open until 8:30 PM. Emergency Department doors are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • In general, visiting hours are from 8:00 AM to 8:30 PM daily. Visiting hours vary by floor or unit, like the ICU. Ask the nurse for your floor’s visiting hours.
  • Children may visit with adult supervision. Children under age 12 are not allowed in the ICU.
  • We encourage one visitor at a time to spend the night in a patient’s room.
  • Certain patient care areas limit visitation. Please ask the nurse for visiting hours and policies for these areas.
  • Visitors need permission from the patient’s doctor to bring food for a patient. Visitors may eat in the patient’s room.
  • All visitors should behave in a responsible manner. Any visitor who exhibits threatening behavior or uses abusive or profane language will be asked to leave the hospital.
  • Visitors may be asked to leave the room so it can be cleaned.

  • For your health, we encourage you to go home and rest in the evenings.
  • Children under age 12 are not permitted to visit patients in the ICU.
  • Special visiting requests for children under age 12 or for close friends are considered by the physician and nurse manager/charge nurse on an individual basis.
  • Call the nursing staff using the telephones in the waiting area or near the ICU doors for visitor approval.
  • Only one adult family member (age 18 or older) is permitted to stay in a patient’s room overnight for patients age 18 and younger.
  • All visitors must remain in the patient’s room while visiting the patient.

  • Food and drinks are prohibited in ICU patient rooms.
  • No live plants or cut flowers are allowed in the ICU.

Visitors should choose one primary spokesperson or contact to communicate with our physicians and nurses about your loved one. This person can share information and updates with others. Life-Saving Trauma Care Close to Home at Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center

An emergency can strike at any moment. When people need life-saving care, Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center (AMC), a Level I Trauma Center providing the most advanced care, is here for them when it matters most.

We have a specially trained trauma team, advanced technology and state-of-the-art treatments to help patients with the most serious types of injuries.

Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center is committed to protecting our patients — just like Cody Williams Martin, Allie Abernathy and Nick Schelkopf — and providing support from treatment to recovery and beyond.

CodyCare: Fast, personalized trauma care

When Cody Williams Martin arrived at Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds, our trauma team sprang into action. As a Level I Trauma Center, we are equipped with the expertise and experience to treat severe injuries when every second counts.

Cody was rushed to the operating room — a space that would become familiar as he returned 28 times during his three-month stay at the facility. Cody’s care team was invested in his progress, cheering him on at each milestone.

“Just knowing I had a good, competent surgical team that was dedicated to helping me — that meant everything,” Cody said. “Just the tenacity, the willingness they had to not give up on me. I don’t think I would be here if I had gone to any other place in Atlanta.”

For people like Cody, having access to advanced care can make all the difference in treatment and recovery.

Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center South is Now Wellstar East Point Health Center

As a not-for-profit health system, Wellstar’s mission is to enhance the health and well-being of every patient it serves, in every community it provides care.  To better match the care provided with the services needed and sought, today Wellstar Health System announces a transition at Atlanta Medical Center South (AMCS). Beginning on May 6, 2022, AMCS’s inpatient hospital services will be consolidated to Atlanta Medical Center.  In addition, AMC South will transition to a new model of care facility, providing outpatient services - primary and rehabilitative care – accessible to all patients in the East Point community, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

“As Georgia’s largest safety net caregiver, we are committed to serve everyone in our community and will continue to do so,” said Candice Saunders, President and CEO of Wellstar Health System. “By refocusing the services AMC provides, we are providing the right care at the right place.”

Since 2016, Wellstar has continued to analyze and more deeply understand patient needs, matching the services provided to the care that’s being used.  This process has included a thorough review of the types of services accessed at each campus, as well as health care services offered but not used. This process showed that Wellstar’s community needed a model of care that provided more preventative care to help individuals better manage their health issues and reduce the potential for those escalating into emergency care situations. Currently, the majority of patient visits to the AMC South emergency room are for lower levels of care that can be better met through the services that will be core of what AMC South’s new care model will provide – primary care, chronic, and medication-related care, to name just a few.

In 2019, Wellstar implemented a social determinants of health program at AMC that placed social worker case managers in the emergency departments as a resource for patients. The case managers perform assessments that capture medical and social needs and then assist patients with support and connecting them to community resources. The program has greatly reduced inpatient admissions for these patients by 42% and ER visits by 38%.

The services that led to these significant improvements in patient outcomes will be in place at AMC South and are the types of new models that Wellstar continues to implement in its commitment to helping communities continue to realize more equitable health results.

The consolidation of inpatient services at the AMC Main campus along with the addition of AMC South team members will continue to provide the same quality healthcare the community has come to expect – through inpatient, emergency department, psychiatric, intensive, and surgery care.

As a not-for-profit health system, the commitment to providing the right care in the right place for the whole community is one that Wellstar continues to invest in.  In 2021 alone, Wellstar invested $915 million in un- and under-compensated care, reflecting its promise to serve all people in our communities. And in 2019, it launched the Wellstar Center for Health Equity to help address social determinants of health, working to help communities reach more equitable health outcomes.
