Wellstar Responds to Tragic 2019 Death at
Cobb County Adult Detention Center

In late July 2020, we received serious allegations surrounding the death of Kevil Wingo at Cobb County Adult Detention Center while Wellstar was the healthcare provider for this facility. Although we ended our contract at the detention center this May, we were deeply concerned about these new allegations and committed to investigating the claims surrounding Mr. Wingo’s death. Over the last few weeks, we have carefully reviewed information as it has been provided to us, including an investigation by the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office. Until this time, Wellstar was not aware of the investigation and had not read the Sheriff’s report or seen any of the evidence. What we have found is heartbreaking and unacceptable.

While we continue to review the facts and circumstances surrounding his death in this unique and complex environment, it is clear that more should have been done for Mr. Wingo that night by everyone working at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center. What we have seen and heard about that night falls tragically short of our beliefs and our expectation that everyone deserves to be heard and to receive compassionate, high-quality care.

These events are not reflective of who we are, and the team members working in the detention center the night Kevil Wingo died are no longer with Wellstar. Most importantly, Kevil Wingo’s life mattered, and we will continue to do everything we can to ensure that every patient receives compassionate high-quality care.
