Dr. Dunson-Allen will develop and implement plans alongside the medical staff, participate in reviews
of the hospital, serve as a member of the hospital’s board representing
the medical staff and chair the Medical Executive Committee.
WellStar Health System recently named Shelley Dunson-Allen, M.D. chief of staff at WellStar North Fulton Hospital. She is the first African American chief of staff and the first female chief of staff at North Fulton Hospital.
In her new role, Dr. Dunson-Allen will develop and implement plans alongside the medical staff, participate in reviews of the hospital, serve as a member of the hospital’s board representing the medical staff and chair the Medical Executive Committee.

At WellStar North Fulton Hospital, Dr. Dunson-Allen works with midwives to offer a holistic approach to pregnancy and birth, including water birth and family-centered cesarean section when necessary. She also performs minimally-invasive robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery at the hospital.
Dr. Dunson-Allen attended Harvard Medical School and completed her internship and residency at Emory University in 1993. She has served as an associate professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Morehouse School of Medicine and as a clinical instructor at Emory University Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics. She has been in practice in North Fulton County since 2001 and serves on the Board of Directors for the Georgia OB/GYN Society. Her private practice is Providence Women’s Healthcare.
WellStar acquired North Fulton Hospital in 2016. Located in Roswell and serving the broader North Fulton community, the hospital is recognized for its Accredited Cancer Program and Primary Stroke Center designations. WellStar North Fulton Hospital is a state-designated Level II Trauma Center. Along with these services WellStar North Fulton Hospital provides a number of specialized centers including a sleep lab, pain and spine center, and an infusion center.
