The training is geared to bilingual persons who understand the crucial importance of effective patient-provider communication and who seek to become trained medical interpreters with the purpose of facilitating communication and helping to eliminate healthcare disparities. It is also offered to medical interpreters already working in the field who would like to fulfill their 40 hour medical interpreter pre-requisite for National Certification. At the conclusion of the program, participants will be able to demonstrate concrete skills in medical interpretation and patient advocacy. A unique aspect of this curriculum is its treatment of culture as an integral part of patient-provider communication. All participants must undergo an initial language skill assessment which must be completed a minimum of 10 days prior to the class start date. Acceptance in the program is dependent upon the outcome.
