Raising Standards for Healthier Hospitals
We believe healthcare excellence means going beyond the acceptable standards for reducing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).
Healthcare-associated infections are infections caused by a wide variety of common and unusual bacteria, fungi and viruses during the course of receiving medical care. Medical advances have brought lifesaving care to patients in need, yet many of those advances come with a risk of these infections.
Wherever patient care is provided, adherence to infection prevention guidelines is needed to ensure that all care is safe care. This includes traditional hospital settings, as well as outpatient surgery centers, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers, physician’s offices and community clinics.
At WellStar, we are proud to have Infection Preventionists at each hospital site who are certified by The Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. These Infection Preventionists are specially trained nurses and medical lab professionals that work with Infectious Disease doctors and medical team members across the system to ensure the safest infection-free care possible.
Our Infection Preventionists are active members of the Georgia Infection Prevention Network, one of the oldest networks of this kind in the country, and the national and Atlanta chapters of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc., as well as The Infectious Diseases Society of America. These networks, along with our very close working relationship with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), allow us to be educated, informed and prepared to provide the highest level of infection prevention possible for all of our patients across the system.
Continually Decreasing Infection Rates
The goal of our Infection Prevention programs is to decrease the rate of infection in all our facilities. These efforts have helped earn WellStar facilities accreditation and recognition, including accolades for WellStar Windy Hill Hospital by the Institute for Health Improvement for reducing HAIs.
