Dr. Knauer received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his residency training in general surgery at the University of Connecticut where he was chief resident. He completed a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. He is a board certified general surgeon.

Dr. Knauer has published numerous articles on general surgery techniques and has made presentations at various medical meetings across the United States. He is a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
