Toddlers (1 to 3 years)

Crawling and walking are just two of the developmental milestones that occur when your baby enters the toddler years. WellStar can help you keep your baby healthy with regularly scheduled wellness checkups that include sensory screenings, behavioral assessments, immunizations and other essential wellness procedures.

Milestones

The toddler years can be as challenging as they are rewarding as your little one develops from infant to a mobile, independent person. Significant milestones include:

  • Walking and carrying or dragging a toy
  • Turning over containers and pouring out contents
  • Recognizing names of familiar objects
  • Finding objects hidden under covers
  • Showing increasing independence

Wellness Visits

Wellness visits to WellStar’s pediatric physicians offer preventive care that sets the stage for a lifetime of good health for your child. These visits provide opportunities for weighing and measuring your child as well as essential immunizations and seasonal influenza shots.

AGE WHAT TO EXPECT
1 Year Immunizations at this age include DTaP, Hib and Polio. Eyesight and hearing will also be evaluated. You may be asked about your toddler’s eating and sleeping habits and social skill development.
15 Months Any catch-up immunizations will be administered. Age-appropriate development will be assessed, such as words your child is learning or if there is anything unusual about his or her walk. Your WellStar pediatrician will answer questions you may have about toilet training and discipline.
18 Months Any earache, infections and colds and flu will be addressed, and the physician will answer questions about toilet training and discipline. Eyesight and hearing will be evaluated.
2 Years Your child’s immunization schedule will be assessed and he or she will be given shots for any that may have been missed. Eyesight and hearing will be checked. Your WellStar pediatrician will check for age-appropriate milestones, such as climbing stairs and using simple phrases.
3 Years Blood pressure, hearing and vision will be checked. Immunizations aren’t typically given unless your child is behind in his or her shots.

Key Immunizations

Your child will receive as many as 26 immunizations by the time he or she is two years old. These immunizations do more than protect your child from harmful childhood diseases like rheumatic fever. They also prevent the spread of dangerous and contagious diseases in our communities. Refer to the immunizations below to learn more.

Nutritional Considerations

How many calories should your toddler consume each day? How do you know if your child is eating too much or too little? Your toddler’s wellness checkups are an excellent time to learn the answer to these and other questions. WellStar can help you set the foundation for a lifetime of good nutrition and eating habits for your child.
