Outpatient Comprehensive Classes

What Can You Expect When You Enroll in a WellStar Diabetes Class?

WellStar's diabetes education program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association. The self-management classes are offered frequently for easy accessibility, and guests are welcome. A physician's referral is usually required.

Many of you have been living with diabetes for years, while others may be recently diagnosed.  The You can! series of classes is designed for all people with diabetes and their families.

The comprehensive classes begin with an individual assessment. First, we gather information about you. We teach you how to monitor your blood glucose (the amount of sugar in your bloodstream), review your medical and diet history, and discuss basic healthy eating. This meeting provides us with the information we need to individualize your education.

Next you will schedule other self-management classes, including:

Other Outpatient Classes

Diabetes management is a lifetime activity. WellStar offers other classes tailored to your individual needs. Culturally appropriate education through interpreters is available for non-English speaking people.

You can! Prevent Diabetes helps you understand the changes needed to halt or slow the progression to diabetes. At this stage, a healthy diet, modest weight loss and increasing physical activity may delay or prevent diabetes. We will show you how. A physician referral is required for insurance reimbursement.

You can! Manage Your Weight If you have diabetes or pre-diabetes and want to control your weight, WellStar's weight management course will help you:

  • Eat a healthy diet.
  • Modify your behavior.
  • Become more active.

You will learn:

  • What foods to choose and how much.
  • How to work exercise into your busy schedule.
  • How to cook healthy meals.
  • How to read a food label.
  • Healthy new habits.

This class meets weekly for eight weeks. A registered dietitian (who is a certified diabetes educator) and a licensed social worker teach the class. The cost for the whole series is $64.
