Stomach cancer - or gastric cancer - afflicts about 21,000 people a year, and causes about 10,500 deaths annually. The disease mainly afflicts older people, with about two-thirds of all cases occurring in people who are older than 65.

Diagnosis

Gastroenterologists diagnose stomach cancer through a variety of tests, which might include:

  • Fecal occult blood test
  • Complete blood count (CBC)
  • Upper GI series (also called a barium swallow)
  • Gastroscopy
  • Imaging tests

Stomach Cancer Stages

When gastric cancer is diagnosed, your WellStar physician will categorize it by the current stage. Each stage describes the progression of the disease and whether the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. You should talk to your WellStar physician to understand each stage, and what it means for your treatment plan.
