2014 WellStar Foundation Champions:
Making a Difference for Patients at Risk to Develop Cancer
Become a 2014 WellStar Foundation Champion by joining our fight against cancer! The early detection of cancer is our greatest chance against a disease that does not discriminate. Your support of this campaign will provide hope to those who may know something is wrong, but cannot afford the necessary diagnostic screenings.
Allison Milligan Gruehn (cancer survivor, mother, wife, community leader), is leading this cause for which she has an immense passion. Because of a family history and genetic threat, the Milligan family funded the start-up of the genetic risk assessment program for cancer right here at WellStar. Through their generosity, the WellStar Genetic Risk Assessment Program now has the highest volume of patients in Georgia, and we will transform the lives of 1,200 patients in 2013 alone. Since its inception, thousands of people have been given peace of mind about their risk of developing cancer and, if they are at high risk, the opportunity to have an individual plan developed by the WellStar cancer team.
The Corky Kell Early Lung Cancer Detection Fund is also a part of this effort to save lives, which was established in memory of Coach Corky Kell. This fund is devoted to saving lives through support of early lung cancer screenings for those at risk. Only 15% of lung cancers are diagnosed at an early, curable stage. Today, there is scientific validation that screening those at high risk with low-dose CT scans can save tens of thousands of lives per year.
Other types of cancer screening available include, but are not limited to cervical, colorectal, ovarian, prostate, uterine. To join or learn more about how to help those at risk, please contact Kati Hyland at email@example.com or 770-956-GIVE (4483).
Become a WellStar Champion
WellStar Champions are members of our community who, through their donations to the WellStar Foundation, provide vital support to the not-for-profit WellStar Health System and make a difference in the lives around them. The WellStar Champions Committee seeks annual support from community members at the $100 or higher level. While all contributions are greatly appreciated, during this special campaign, we are specifically seeking gifts of $100, $250, or even $500.
