WellStar Health System will be hosting a Family Fun Safety Day on Friday, July 26, in an effort to educate Cobb County families on safety techniques and procedures for day-to-day living and during emergency situations.
The event will take place at the Cobb County Safety Village, an eight-acre facility designed for emergency training and community safety education. The Village is a mock community complete with stoplights, sidewalks and four reduced-scale buildings, which provide a backdrop for safety training classes and other events.
“It’s such a unique and exciting learning facility,” Cobb County Safety Village Event Director Alison Carter said. “I’m excited we get to open and expose ourselves to the community.”
This Family Fun and Safety Day is the second the Cobb Safety Village has hosted. The first Safety Day occurred in June and brought in more than 350 attendees to the Village. Carter was happy with that result.
“We were looking for an opportunity to open up the village and show how we’re growing,” Carter said. “We thought it was a great turn-out for our first time.”
The event will include a tour Sparky’s House, which is equipped with smoke machines and detectors, so that families can rehearse fire escape behavior in a controlled but realistic environment. There will also be interactive presentations of the Village’s 10 emergency vehicles, including police cars and fire engines.
While most of Cobb Safety Villages programming is designed for other elementary school students, the organization hope to expand their reach to younger age groups through summer programming like Safety Day. Summer camps and pre-schools now have the opportunity to be involved throughout the summer months.
Demonstration on water safety will be presented by WellStar-sponsored Safe Kids of Cobb County. The Safe Kids organization strives to prevent unintentional injury in children and assist in developing a safer community for children to live, play and attend school. Safe Kids provides programs not only for water safety, but also fire safety, youth sports safety and fire prevention.
Entertainment for the Family Fun and Safety Day will also be provided by SafePath Children’s Advocacy Center, partnered with Radio Disney. Refreshments will be provided by Harry’s Farmers Market.
Carter hopes to see events like the Family Fun and Safety Day develop as the program grows.
“Hopefully we’ll continue these on every summer,” Carter said. “As we grow more we’ll be able to reach out to families on the outside, and then we’ll be able to open up more.”
The event will take place at Cobb County Safety Village at 1120 Al Bishop Drive in Marietta. Admission is $5.00 per person. For group rates of more than 20 attendees or further information, please call (770) 852-3270.
