WELLSTAR BOARD OF TRUSTEES

2013 – 2014


Our Board of Trustees includes nationally recognized leaders in petroleum, engineering, law, internal medicine, pediatrics, family practice, cardiothoracic surgery, finance, military, energy and other demanding disciplines. These individuals continuously partner with North-metro Atlanta community and civic organizations, like WellStar Health System, to help improve the health and well-being of the communities.

Avril Beckford, M.D. Avril Beckford, M.D.
Beckford practices at WellStar Medical Group, Pediatric & Adolescent Center. She is an Academy of Pediatrics fellow and past Georgia chapter president. She completed her residency at Penn State Children’s Hospital and her medical degree at the University of Cape Town. She joined the WellStar Board of Trustees in 2011.
Randall Bentley, Sr. Randall Bentley, Sr.
Randall Bentley, a partner with the Marietta firm Bentley, Bentley & Bentley, received his B.B.A. in marketing from The University of Georgia and J.D. from Georgia State University College of Law. Bentley is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, President of Phi Alpha Delta-Georgia State University College of Law, Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, Federal District Court, Supreme Court of Georgia, Court of Appeals of Georgia, Cobb Bar Association and American Bar Association. He is a former Chair of the WellStar Board of Trustees. He is also a member of the WellStar Foundation Board of Trustees, Cobb County Kennestone Hospital Authority, Kennestone Regional Board, past member of the Joseph T. Walker School Board, Charter Bank & Trust Co., Pinnacle Orthopaedics Foundation, Inc., Gridiron Secret Society – The University of Georgia, along with many other charitable organizations.
Otis Brumby III Otis Brumby III
Otis Brumby received his B.B.A. in finance from The University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business, and his J.D. from The University of Georgia’s College of Law. Brumby is general manager of the Marietta Daily Journal, Neighbor Newspapers, Cherokee Tribune, Cobb Life Magazine, Cherokee Life Magazine and Sandy Springs Life. Brumby’s community involvement includes: Georgia Press Association Board Member, Southern Newspaper Association Member, SafePath Children’s Advocacy Center Board Member, Cobb Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, WellStar Regional Health Board Member, Pinnacle Foundation Board Member, First United Methodist Church of Marietta, Brumby/Leonard Family Foundation Member, Leadership Cobb, Class of 2008, and the Marietta Rotary Club.
Robert N. Cross, M.D. Robert N. Cross, M.D.
Robert Cross M.D. received his bachelor’s degree from Emory University and his medical degree from Georgia Health Sciences University, formerly the Medical College of Georgia. He was an intern in internal medicine at The Presbyterian Medical Center in Denver, Colo. He served as resident in internal medicine at Atlanta Medical Center and resident in radiology at Emory University. He was an assistant professor of clinical radiology at Emory University School of Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Radiology. He has been a staff member of WellStar’s hospitals since 1978. He is past president of the Cobb County Medical Society and past chairman of the WellStar Board of Trustees.
T.E. “Rusty” Durham T.E. “Rusty” Durham
Rusty Durham received his B.A. in math from Georgia State University, professional banker from Kennesaw State University and registered radiologic technician degree from Chattahoochee Technical College. Durham retired from the Georgia Department of Administrative Services as director of strategic planning and Community Trust Bank, where he served as senior vice president of sales. He is currently employed part time as a radiologic technologist for WellStar. Durham has held numerous leadership positions within his church and currently serves on the WellStar Community Assurance Company Board. He is a member and past chair of the Paulding County Hospital Authority and WellStar Paulding Hospital Regional Board. He is a past member of the WellStar Foundation Board, Highland Rivers Community Services Board, Paulding County Library Board, Paulding County Chamber of Commerce, Selective Service Board and Dallas Lions Club.
Thomas E. Gearhard, M.D. Thomas E. Gearhard, M.D.
Thomas Gearhard, M.D., has been in family practice for many years and is very active in his church and the South Cobb community. He is a graduate of the University of Florida College of Medicine, part of the WellStar Medical Group and practices at Cobb Family Medicine.
David H. Hafner, M.D., FACS, Vice Chair David H. Hafner, M.D., FACS, Vice Chair
David Hafner, M.D., is a partner at Vascular Surgical Associates, PC in Marietta, Georgia. Dr. Hafner received his undergraduate degree in biology at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, and received his medical degree at the Georgia Health Sciences University in Augusta, Georgia. He completed his internship, residency, and vascular fellowship at Emory University affiliated hospitals. He is board certified in surgery with the added board certification qualification in vascular surgery, and is a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery. In addition, he is the medical director of WellStar’s vascular lab.
T. Fitz Johnson T. Fitz Johnson
Fitz Johnson comes from a strong military background. He is a 1985 graduate of The Citadel Military College of South Carolina and served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserves for more than 21 years. Johnson holds a M.S. from Troy University and a J.D. from The University of Kentucky College of Law. Johnson joined forces with his father, Brigadier General (R) Walter F. Johnson, at Eagle Group International, a company his father founded in 1995. Eagle Group International, a defense contracting firm, specialized in technical services to the federal government in the areas of logistics, healthcare, training, and information technology. It was sold to Lockheed Martin in May 2008. While with the company Johnson served as chief counsel, vice president for Human Resources, executive vice president, chief operating officer, president and CEO. Johnson is on many boards and committees throughout the community including the WellStar Foundation Board, Cobb Energy Centre Foundation, Cobb Chamber of Commerce board, Chairman’s Club and Leadership Cobb. He is the chairman for the Board of Governors for Women’s Professional Soccer and chairman for the Atlanta Beat Soccer Foundation. Johnson has also served for several years on the Marietta High School Governance Team. He is a member of the Kentucky Bar, and also serves his community as a member of Chi Gamma Gamma chapter of Omega Psi Phi, Inc. Johnson attends St. Joseph Catholic church in Marietta.
Charlie Jones Charlie Jones
Charlie Jones is a graduate of The University of Georgia. He served in the Georgia National Guard for six years and entered the building and development business in 1962. Jones is president of Charleston Investment Properties, a business primarily involved in stock investments and the management of rental properties. He is the past chair of the Kennestone Hospital Authority and member of the Cobb County Hospital Authority. He is currently a member of the Kennestone Hospital Authority and Kennestone Regional Board. Jones was founder and chair of Smyrna Bank & Trust Company. He is a former Cobb County Commissioner and Cobb County Jury Commissioner. His community involvement includes past director of the Cobb County Development Authority, previous director of the Cobb County Airport Authority, past vice chair of our Savior Lutheran Church Council, past director of the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce and the EMS Board of the Atlanta Regional Council. Jones is also the founding director of Community Bank of the South.
Janie Maddox Janie Maddox
Janie Maddox retired from Post Properties as Senior Vice President of Community and External Affairs. Her responsibilities included public relations, government and community affairs, the Post Hope Foundation and numerous employee events. Ms. Maddox is a member of the KSU Foundation Board of Trustees and a past member of the Board of Trustees of Good Samaritan Health Center. She is a past member of the board of directors of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce and Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Maddox is a graduate of Leadership Cobb and Leadership Georgia and is past chair of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce.
Gary A. Miller, Chair Gary A. Miller, Chair
Gary Miller was appointed president and CEO of GreyStone Power Corporation in January 1999. Prior to his appointment, Miller spent seven years as vice president of the Financial Services Division of GreyStone. He is a graduate of North Georgia College and State University, is a certified public accountant and holds a law degree from Georgia State University. Miller is also active in the community, where he is the past chair of the Douglas County Chamber of Commerce and serves on the board of the Douglas County Development Authority, Hospital Authority of Douglas County, the WellStar Douglas Regional Board and Douglas County United Way. He is an advisory board member of Regions Bank, interim board member of the Regional Youth Shelter, a board member of the Communities in Schools and vice president of the Douglas County Soccer Association. He serves as a trustee at Inner Harbour Hospital and serves on and chairs numerous committees at the statewide level on behalf of GreyStone Power and Georgia’s EMCs.
Mitzi Moore Mitzi Moore
Mitzi Moore is president, owner and co-founder of Sundial Plumbing in Marietta. She has more than 23 years of experience emphasizing business development and leadership in the plumbing contract industry. She serves on numerous boards, including Kennesaw State University and Chattahoochee Technical College.
Greg Morgan Greg Morgan
Greg Morgan is the partner-in-charge of the Atlanta office of Mauldin & Jenkins, LLC, where he is responsible for the administration of the Atlanta office and ensuring Mauldin & Jenkins meets client expectations. He is a certified public accountant and graduate of Georgia Southern University. Morgan is a previous chairman of the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce.
Thomas M. Phillips Thomas M. Phillips
Thomas Phillips was born in Atlanta and graduated from Georgia State University. After being employed with Gulf Oil and Amoco Oil Company, he built the Tom M. Phillips Oil Company in Jasper, Georgia, an Amoco Oil and BP Oil Company Jobber ship from 1966 to 2010. Presently, he manages the Tom M. Phillips Company in Jasper, which is a real estate holding company. In 2002 he was the “Citizen of the Year” in Towns County for his contributions to the community. He was recognized in 2005 and 2006 by the Jamison magazine as one of the “Most Influential Georgians”. He is a strong supporter of the single mom’s ministry at Noonday Baptist Church where he mentors single mothers. He is a supporter of the nursing program at Kennesaw State University and has established a scholarship for that purpose. He currently is a member of the Cobb County Kennestone Hospital Authority.
Walter G. Robinson Walter G. Robinson
Walter Robinson received his B.S./E.E. from the School of Engineering, Tuskegee University and M.B.A. from the College of Business Administration, Mercer University. He is retired from BellSouth as the telecommunications network manager and the U.S. Air Force as an information systems officer. Robinson’s community involvement includes Junior Achievement, American Legion, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, NAACP and Leadership Cobb.
Frank Ros Frank Ros
Frank P. Ros was the Team Captain of the University of Georgia’s 1980 National Football Champions, Academic All-SEC and past recipient of the University of Georgia Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Post-Graduate Award. He currently serves as Vice President, Hispanic Strategies for The Coca-Cola Company where he transformed a one-market urban community relations program, Coca-Cola Presents Art of Harmony, into a nine-market, nationally recognized and award-winning property. Born in Barcelona, Spain, Ros lives in Kennesaw, Georgia with his wife, Jan Floyd-Ros, and sons, Frank VI and Bryce where he enjoys mountain biking, weightlifting, running and reading.
O. Scott Swayze, M.D. O. Scott Swayze, M.D.
Dr. Swayze is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon and current president of Pinnacle Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, LLC. He started practice in Marietta in 1992 and specializes in surgery of the hip and knee. He received his undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from Vanderbilt University and his M.D. from the University of Mississippi. His orthopaedic training was completed at Emory University.
Jeffrey L. Tharp, M.D., MPH Jeffrey L. Tharp, M.D., MPH
Jeffrey L. Tharp, MD, MPH has practiced Internal Medicine in Paulding County since 1992. He received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College, a masters degree in Public Health from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, and his medical degree from the University of Tennessee-Memphis, where he also completed his Internal Medicine Residency with a focus on Primary Care. A native of Albany, GA, Dr. Tharp has been involved with leadership at WellStar since its inception and currently serves as the Chief of the Medicine Service Line, Chairman of the Board Safety and Quality Committee, and on the WellStar Board Executive Committee. He is a past president of the Cobb County Medical Society, has served on the Paulding County Board of Health since 1994, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Medical Association of Georgia. He and his family are members of Northside United Methodist Church, Atlanta.
