WellStar has responded by developing and providing a broad range of services for those affected by diabetes. Helping our community prevent and manage diabetes is a WellStar area of excellence and important health initiative.

What has led to WellStar's committment?

Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S.and every 24 hours there are:

  • 4,100 new cases
  • 810 deaths
  • 120 cases of kidney failure
  • 55 new incidences of blindness

Devastating complications like these are expected to double by 2025, and our ability to prevent and control diabetes will become crucial to our nation's health.

Diabetes is an "equivalent" risk factor for heart disease. This means the risk for heart events is as great for someone with diabetes as for someone who already has heart disease.

Self-management is the key word for preventing diabetes and/or preventing the complications of diabetes. Understanding the disease and taking the steps needed for its control constitute the backbone of living well with diabetes. WellStar provides services in many areas for helping people prevent or control diabetes.
